Marketcargo is underway!
Hello everyone! This is the first post in a string of updates that will be coming to you from the dedicated staff and volunteers with Marketcargo, a cycling advocacy and cargo bike produce delivery service operating from two farmers’ markets in Vancouver, as well as the UBC Farm, during the summer of 2009.
My submission to the Canada Summer Jobs grant program on behalf of the AMS Bike Co-op was a success, and the Bike Co-op has now hired a full time staff person, Martin Gunst, to help run Marketcargo throughout the summer. We are offering three basic services from the Kits and Main St markets: free advice and info about how to equip your bike with carrying capacity, free basic bike repairs and tune-ups, and a free home delivery service for market shoppers.
This summer Marketcargo will also be cultivating a special partnership with the Farmers on 57th, a group of market gardeners growing fruit and veggies on a plot of land at the George Pearson Centre, a long-term care facility in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver. Marketcargo will be using the AMS Bike Co-op’s cargo fleet to deliver all of the market gardeners’ fresh market produce for sale at the Main St. Market each Wednesday. Come out and taste some of the most locally produced and sustainably delivered food available, or allow Marketcargo to deliver some of it home for you by bike; truly farm to table!
Marketcargo will debut this Sunday, June 7th at the Kitsilano Farmer’s Market, from 10am – 2pm. Come check us out!
