Thank You

The Nutrikids program has been incredibly successful. Here is a thank you note from one of many happy teachers:

I'm a teacher at QE Elementary down the hill from UBC. I just wanted
to thank you for coordinating this program for students. Fiona and
other presenters (can't recall names, sorry) came to present to the
gr.4/5 students. They really enjoyed this visit and we've continued on
with this topic. It is so great that educational, free, informative
workshops about health are available and accessible for our students.

Vanhorne Elementary Report

Our experience at Vanhorne Elementary was definitely a memorable one. The children of were so cute. They were very eager to learn and surprised us with their in depth knowledge of food and nutrition. Contrary to what we expected, they had a broad understanding of the food groups. The kids opted for very health lunches and snacks compared to what we used to eat as children. We lead a class discussion about what types of food you should include in each of your meals. We also played a flashcard game where the class needed to guess what a food item was based on questions about the food. Finally, we allowed each student to make yogurt parfaits, incorporating all the food groups including nuts, seeds, berries, and granola as toppings. We had a very positive experience and we are sure the kids did as well. We would definitely recommend everyone to participate this valuable experience.

October Updates

1. ONE MORE TRAINING WORKSHOP

We have set up one more workshop that we believe you would find to be very helpful!

This will be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, 2009 in McMillan 158

Our speaker will be Lauren, a dietetics student who is also finishing off her Integrated Science major at UBC (in Microbiology & Immunology & FNH, with a minor in Commerce). She has taken on several roles as a children’s nutritional educator in the community. As a representative for Kin’s Farm Market and COBS Bread, she delivered presentations to promote an interest in healthy eating to schools throughout the Lower Mainland. She has spent the last year teaching nutrition through after school cooking classes with the Vancouver School Board and is in the process of completing research into the best practices in nutritional education. Lauren has designed interactive activities and has a wide variety of recipes and teaching techniques to share!

This would be a great opportunity to get some ideas for your workshops and to talk to students in dietetics!

Please let us know if you plan on attending this workshop by sending us an email.

2. WANT TO TAKE ON MORE CLASSES?

If your pod group is interested in completing more workshops, we have a nice list of classes on a waiting list for you! Please email us and we will find you a classroom accordingly!

3. RESOURCES & EVALUATION FORM

Resources and evaluation forms are now posted underĀ Volunteer Information!
